ABOUT US

"Partnering with 21st Street Publishing Group to bring my stories to prisons has been an extraordinary journey. As someone who began my writing career while incarcerated, I understand the power of a good book behind bars. Seeing my novels reach inmates, who find solace and inspiration in my characters and stories, is deeply fulfilling. This program isn't just about expanding readership; it's about impacting lives where it truly matters. It’s an honor to be part of such a meaningful and transformative initiative."

Wahida Clark

CEO, WCP Distribution

21st Street's collaborative goal is to protect the US prisoner's constitutional right to read and to provide a diverse selection of literary work to incarcerated readers, while also providing valuable book distribution for indie authors, small publishing houses and indie/self-publishers.

Our distribution service will help lighten the economic impact of mass incarceration on the inmate's loved ones, particularly as it relates to reading, and also help negate the historic and unconstitutional barrier of access to literature for the incarcerated reader. We have collaborated with the leaders in the self-publishing industry, here and overseas, to ensure the best indie literary selection possible for our incarcerated reader's pleasure.

How do I Apply & What Do I Need to Prepare?

How do I Apply? Formal invitations for the 'Commissary Edition' are sent to authors whose works have been meticulously reviewed by the WCPD Department Reviewing team. Only works that achieve a minimum star rating of 4 stars are considered for the program. Upon finalizing a score, we invite the author to the program and display the review on our website.

What Do I Need to Prepare? To be part of this exciting venture, authors must provide: Cover Blurb and a back cover synopsis. This will be used for promoting your title. It should be sent as a Word Doc attachment. Letter to Reader/Foreword by Author: Every title should have either a “Letter to the Reader” or a Foreword. This can offer character backgrounds, encouraging words for the incarcerated, and even direct contact details. Download the FAQ's Document for more information.

Book Club Questions: For engagement, all authors must add five to ten Book Club Questions at the end of your book. This fosters discussions among inmates and their loved ones since we’re also offering 'Commissary Edition' to the public. Mandatory Adherence: In collaboration with the 21st First Street Publishing Group and governing entities, we must strictly follow these requirements. The program’s foundation, established over years of negotiations with the USA Prison System, mandates these conditions. Any deviations might jeopardize the distribution of your work.
